New Phone On The Block

The latest news on the web reveals high chances of a GSM version of the Palm Pre mobile phone coming to the European users on Vodafone's network. The company came to the Mobile World of the Congress in Barcelona, Spain, with a few GSM handsets, Rumors are generated by the fact that a Vodafone Spain SIM card was spotted inside one of the GSM devices demonstrated by the mobile phone maker at the show, coupled with the presence of Vodafone ES on the list of the active carriers for another showcased device. However neither Palm, nor Vodafone commented on the signing of an agreement for GSM distribution in Europe. But talks for a possible deal were reported. According to a post on PalmPreBlog, the discussions between Vodafone and Palm were real, although the two companies rather deny such a move. On the other hand that Vodafone's rival in Germany, O2, has exclusivity deal with Apple for its iPhone 3G. So the launch of this phone can be a legitimate one. It is a common fact that Pre will be launched in the United States exclusively on Sprint, and the launch date is guessed to be on March 15th. Still uncertainty prevails regarding the time it will take for the phone to hit the store shelves.

When you are on a move, you should be able to use your cell phone as a modem to connect your laptop to the internet. In today’s world, connectivity is the key to success. You will get different types of plans for different providers. Some plans have additional data packages, thus they do not require any other service plans. Fees for voice over services are not charged generally, however, it is adjusted with the service plan minutes. Before you can actually use your cell phone as a modem, you have to enable the data service facility. If you having some trouble doing so, you can contact the customer service personnel. But remember that cell phones used as modem does not give a high speed like wi-fi or broadband. The actual speed depends on whether the connection is digital or analog. But this speed is more than enough if you are planning to use it for checking mails only. Now you will be able to use your cell as a modem and successfully complete the minor assignments.

Filed under: Handsets, Pantech, Helio, Virgin Mobile, EV-DO, CDMA While the Americanized version of Helio's Ocean 2 has gobs of red accents (thanks, Virgin Mobile!), many have wondered if an all black version would hit the scenes as well. Clearly, that answer is... well, maybe. A South Korean Helio page shows two variants of the newest Ocean, with one devoid of all those fiery accents. Obviously, we've no way to tell if this thing is ever coming to US soil, but this just might be the excuse you needed to hit up Seoul for an extended weekend.[Via MobileCrunch]Helio's Ocean 2 spotted in all black attire originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 13 Feb 2009 17:09:00 EST. Australian publication ARN reported Tuesday that the Taiwanese manufacturer announced 20-percent price increases for all its existing and upcoming notebooks and Eee products beginning March. However, the publication did not cite a source or an official statement from Asus. Also, Asus Germany has denied such claims and Asus USA said it is unaware of any price increases. ARN's report also cited the economic downturn as a reason for increased component costs to explain Asus's price hike. However, if that were true, Asus's competitors would be forced to raise prices as well. A spokesman for Multi-Star International, a netbook manufacturer also based in Taiwan, told Wired.com it has no plans for price increases. Asus USA told Wired.com it will contact Asus Taiwan for clarification. We'll post an update once we hear back. Asus hikes prices on all notebooks and Eee products [ARN] Photo: Brian X. Mitsubishi temporarily suspends production of LaserVue HDTVs

Filed under: Displays, Mitsubishi, LCD We had heard that certain Mitsubishi representatives had been telling Diamond dealers that production had been suspended on the outfit's flagship LaserVue HDTV, and sure enough, the story is true. We have confirmed with Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America that the outfit has "temporarily suspended production of LaserVue televisions due to a problem with manufacturing equipment used to produce LaserVue TVs." We're also informed that "Mitsubishi Electric engineers are taking the necessary action to ensure that the company resumes production as quickly as possible, while maintaining the highest standards for product quality and reliability." So far as we know, this isn't a sign of sudden discontinuation, as Mitsu has affirmed that it's "expecting production to resume in early 2009." We'll update with more as we get it in.Update: We asked a few followup questions, and we did find that Mitsu isn't anticipating any supply issues, which indicates the problem may be short lived (or at least it hopes so). As for an official comment on what went wrong? "LaserVue production was suspended due to a manufacturing equipment issue." That's all we've got.[Thanks, Chuck]Mitsubishi temporarily suspends production of LaserVue HDTVs originally appeared on Engadget HD on Wed, 11 Feb 2009 12:32:00 EST. More interesting for gadget geeks, the notebook can hold a solid state drive over half a terabyte large. Lined with brown leather, the S121 is part of Asus's high-end line of 12.1-inch notebooks. The notebook, powered by a 1.3GHz Atom processor, normally ships with a hard disk drive, but Asus offers a 512GB SSD as an optional upgrade. That's pretty damn huge for solid state. Just a year ago, the industry was barely breaking double digits in terms of gigabyte capacity for solid state drives. The advantage of solid state is there are no moving parts, which thus makes these drives less fragile and more quiet. Solid state ain't cheap, though. Taking Apple's MacBook Air, for example -- upgrading from a 120GB hard disk drive to a 128GB solid state drive costs an additional $500. Asus's S101 starts at $1,650 with the default configuration. The company didn't have a price yet for the SSD option, but I'd estimate you'd have to pay at least an extra $700. The S101 ships end of January. Top 10 films that should be released on Blu-ray — do you agree?

Filed under: Industry, Misc, Blu-ray Sound & Vision has a rather interesting article up about the ten films that it most wants to see released on Blu-ray, and while we concur with the most of 'em, we're interested to see what you readers think as well. Before delving into your fanboy-ish desires, however, it's important to note that past popularity isn't necessarily a sign that a particular movie will be re-released on BD. As we've learned before, there are quite a few variables that studios take into consideration outside of just public perception. We're tempted to blurt out all ten right here for discussion, but we know how disgruntled some of you folks get when spoilers are sprung on you.Top 10 films that should be released on Blu-ray -- do you agree? originally appeared on Engadget HD on Sun, 26 Oct 2008 22:28:00 EST. This news alone isn’t anything special as the specs have been available for quite some time, but we now know a few details about the Pre’s internal storage and some service details. Does this mean the Pre is coming soon or did Sprint and Palm just finalize some details? 7.4GB will actually be available from the 8GB included, possibly implying the size of the OS is somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 megs or so (though it’s still unclear what the relationship between the 8GB of storage and RAM will be, and whether or not the Pre will use Program Memory RAM/Storage ROM/Mass Storage like Windows Mobile or have a simpler RAM/Storage setup like other phones). Also, MMS is CONFIRMED. So is Phone-as-modem via bluetooth or USB tethering. Yes!! We’re just as excited as the guys over at PreCentral, but it’s still coming to Sprint first and that stinks for us GSM users. Cord Lock Flashlight Dangles Dongle From Jackets

LEDs are kind of like the integrated circuit of the flashlight world -- they are so tiny that they can be squeezed into just about anything -- you no longer need to worry about big incandescent bulbs or D-Cell batteries.... LEDs are kind of like the integrated circuit of the flashlight world -- they are so tiny that they can be squeezed into just about anything -- you no longer need to worry about big incandescent bulbs or D-Cell batteries. The downside is that this kind of thinking leads us to all kinds of badly designed junk (I'm looking at you, USB thumb drives). Fortunately, the folks at Sahalie are hawking a very useful LED lamp, a tiny glowing light built into a cord lock, the cord clamps found on jackets and bags of all kinds. The name you can probably guess. It's called the Cord Lock Light. The little $10 widget hangs from your coat doing the exact same clothes-fastening job that a regular dumb clamp would do. But when you need to read a map, or find a keyhole, or dig your iPod from the bottom of your bag, it's there for you. It's even water resistant, for use in a bar. The obvious next step for this tech is the Fly Zipper LED, for safely aiming streams whilst seeking relief in darkened alleyways on those long, long walks back from the pub. China to give analog TV the boot by 2015

Filed under: Industry, Regulatory, OTA While the US of A is gritting its teeth and hoping the world doesn't implode when it switches completely to digital TV next February, many other nations around the globe are just now setting up their own timeline. For China, the magic year looks to be 2015. Professor Huang Yong, the deputy editor-in-chief of China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, recently stated that program production would be "turned from analog to digital" seven years from now, though he didn't say what kind of technology would be used for digital broadcasting. Knowing China, though, it'll cook up something the rest of the globe has no interest in for the sake of saving on licensing fees.[Image courtesy of DayLife]China to give analog TV the boot by 2015 originally appeared on Engadget HD on Tue, 28 Oct 2008 10:45:00 EST. Panasonic’s HDC-HS300 HD camcorder reviewed, thoroughly enjoyed

Filed under: Reviews, Panasonic, Camcorders Panasonic's HDC-HS300 was unleashed amidst a flurry of other camcorders at CES this year, but according to Trusted Reviews, it won't be hiding under the shadows of everyone else for long. Rather than bogging you down with details, we'll just get right to the punch -- critics didn't hesitate to suggest that this "could well be the best [consumer] camcorder released all year." The most important aspect (yes, we're talking about image quality) was said to be "nothing short of stunning in virtually all conditions," and low light performance was deemed "particularly amazing." There were plenty of outputs, a swank touchscreen LCD and a very impressive cross-shaped array of microphones that could record 5.1 audio. Add all that up, and you've got a real winner; in fact, these guys suggested that even Canon's stellar line of VIXIA camcorders should watch closely, 'cause the HS300 is stepping all up in that rarefied air.Panasonic's HDC-HS300 HD camcorder reviewed, thoroughly enjoyed originally appeared on Engadget HD on Sat, 07 Feb 2009 12:53:00 EST.
